EPA 2027 Emissions Standards: How Much Will New Truck Prices Increase?

Everyone’s talking about the EPA’s upcoming 2027 emissions standards. If you haven’t heard, then here’s the gist: These standards are going to increase the price of new trucks – by a lot.

How much will truck prices increase with the EPA’s 2027 emission standards?

The new emissions standards from the EPA will raise the prices of new Class 8 trucks by an estimated $10,000 to $20,000, according to Lone Mountain Truck Leasing’s internal projections. Some experts say up to $30,000.

Plus, we’re already seeing manufacturers up their pricing due to the current market. The new standards are expected to push prices up more during a time when owner-operators and fleet owners are already buying trucks to save money.

So, if you’re thinking about buying a new semi-truck anytime soon, now’s the time to apply. Wait too much longer and you’re going to be forking over extra cash.

What DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT the EPA 2027 Emissions Standards?

The EPA’s 2027 heavy-duty engine rules will set the strictest emissions limits we have ever seen here in the U.S. The entire trucking industry is going to be affected.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Big reductions in NOx: Nitrogen-oxide (NOx) emissions are required to drop by 82.5% to 0.035 grams per horsepower-hour during normal operation. There are also strict caps on low-load and idling emissions.
  • Complex engine redesigns: Manufacturers are introducing complex aftertreatment systems to meet these requirements. This includes larger SCR catalysts, 48-volt electrical systems, heated DEF dosing and advanced cylinder deactivation.
  • Extended warranties and useful life: The new rule increases the “useful life” of heavy-duty engines from 435,000 miles to 650,000 miles and 750,000 miles for certification. Emissions-related warranties jump from 100,000 miles to 450,000 miles for Class-8 trucks.
